 What is a web database?

Simply put, a web database is a way to store and deliver web content in a structured and searchable format. An application program manages communications between the web database and a web server.

A database file contains information such as field name, privileges, passwords, calculations, graphics, layouts and scripts. Field values in a web database file can be:

  • text
  • a number
  • a date
  • a time
  • a graphic, sound or movie
  • a calculation or formula

A typical database web site would be a catalog. Users could search for a product based on color, style or name. The product page would be dynamically rendered based on the information contained in the database that matched the search criteria.
